available as CD	Great Recordings From The Pre-Stax Period The Mar-Keys were an all-white band formed in 1958, comprising Steve Cropper and Duck Dunn, drummer Terry Johnson, pianist Jerry Lee “Smoochie” Smith and saxophonists Don Nix and Axton and trumpeter Wayne Jackson. in 1960 they joined the fledgling Satellite label as house band, and a year later enjoyed a #3 hit with ‘Last Night’. Satellite changed its name to Stax and the Mar-Keys continued to back the Stax artists and release their own singles, although none achieved the same success. the album “Last Night” appears as tracks 1-12. 1962’s “Do The Pop-eye” fills the remainder of the CD, with instrumentals named after characters from the cartoon series. by this time the band had been joined by Booker T Jones and the embryonic sound of Booker T & The MGs can be heard. fascinating sleeve notes by Stax historian Rob Bowman. 01. available as CD	Classic Material From His Disco Sides Isaac Hayes's distinctively syncopated rhythm tracks and lavishly orchestrated arrangements helped lay the stylistic foundation for what would become known as disco, and in 1976, the Memphis Soulman jumped headfirst into the new dance craze with Groove-a-thon for his short-lived Hot Buttered Soul label. perhaps he was premature, as the 12-inch single format that came to characterise the disco era-and would have proven ideal for the sensual ‘Rock Me Easy Baby’ and the tour-de-force title track-had not yet been introduced. the album thus "undeservedly" fell "into historical neglect" as Stax historian Rob Bowman puts it in his meticulously researched booklet notes, but with this CD reissue, it stands up well for re-evaluation as a true masterpiece of Soul. 01.
