Joe Tex - From The Roots - Came The Rapper - Kent CD
![]() available as CD |
First Time On CD Inc. The In-Demand Modern Soul Monster "Lesley" this expanded compilation really does present as fully rounded a representation of the multitalented Joe Tex as it is possible to find on one CD. consider, if you will, the stylistic mix that incorporates the Bobby Bland-like Texas swing of Tryin' To Win Your Love, the aforementioned trio of Modern Soul dancers, the appropriately struttin', chicken-fried funk of King Thaddeus and the couldn't-be-more-definitive-if-it-tried down-home Soul of For My Woman. then add to this those 10 tracks that made up the 1971 album - which was originally intended to be released with side two as side one, and vice versa, so we've flipped it to the way it should be, in the interests of accuracy and a better listen - and you have almost 80 minutes of undisputed southern Soul heaven.

Rufus Thomas - The Funkiest Man - Stax 2LP/CD
![]() available as 2LP/CD |
Rufus Thomas During That Period When He Was The Funkiest Man Alive "The Funkiest Man" is Ace's affectionate tribute to one of the true legends of Memphis Soul, and a man whose Stax career ran for over a decade and a half, from the label's earliest days to its closing weeks. it's not a "Singles As And Bs", nor is it a "Best Of" - other Ace/Stax releases have already taken care of business in those departments. what it is, though, is a full-on farrago of Funk, with Rufus and a batch of the best musicians Memphis ever produced - I'm talking Bar-Kays, MGs, Isaac Hayes Movement and Memphis Horns here, people! - working up a full head of dancefloor steam on 18 funky sides that, beat for beat, are a match for anything and everything that others from the golden age of Funk could offer in retaliation, James Brown included. Carla Thomas - Gee Whiz - Stax CD
![]() available as CD |
Recordings From The Beginning Of Carla Thomas To Be The Undisputed Queen Of Memphis Carla Thomas, the daughter of fabled Memphis entertainer Rufus Thomas, was all of 16 when she wrote "Gee Whiz (Look at His Eyes)", a plaintive love song that reflects the influence of one of her idols, New York-based R&B singer "Baby" Washington. Rufus took a demo of the tune to Vee-Jay Records in Chicago, who passed on it. Satellite, a fledgling Memphis firm, was more receptive, though the session nearly fell apart when the string arranger failed to show, forcing company co-owner Jim Stewart to create a chart off the cuff. Carla's recording shot to #5 on the R&B best-seller list and to #10 Pop. this success launched the company, soon to be renamed Stax, into major orbit and marked the beginning of Carla Thomas's reign as the undisputed Queen of Memphis Soul. First UK Release on CD. includes bonus track of alternate version of "Promises".

William Bell - The Soul Of A Bell - Stax CD
![]() available as CD |
Including Classic Soul Shots Like Everybody Loves A Winner, Any Other Way, ... with its distinctive combination of black gospel and white country elements, William Bell's 1961 hit "You Don't Miss Your Water" signalled the stylistic direction that Stax Records, in particular, and Southern Soul music, in general, would take for the remainder of the decade. the Soul crooner scored one more hit, 1962's "Any Other Way", before the army took him off the scene for two years. he returned to recording in strong form following his discharge and continued charting, with "Never Like This Before" and "Everybody Loves a Winner", both included on this, his first album. because "You Don't Miss Your Water" and "Any Other Way" had been recorded in mono, Bell decided to cut new stereo versions while working on this 1967 set. both feature fidelity far superior to the original recordings and are in many ways finer musically than the versions first issued on 45.

Pleasure - Dust Yourself Off / Accept No Substitutes - Fantasy CD
![]() available as CD |
Containing The Two Classic Albums From The Mid 70s Pleasure was one of the strongest of the self-contained singing-playing R&B units to emerge in the wake of Sly and the Family Stone. Funk, pop, and jazz elements converge in the highly satisfying music on the Portland, Oregon octet's initial two albums, both produced by Wayne Henderson of the Crusaders. On the first, 1975's "Dust Yourself Off", the band is augmented by Crusaders keyboardist Joe Sample. the second, "Accept No Substitutes" from the following year, features "Ghettos of the Mind", a very jazzy, largely instrumental piece that gave the group the first of its nine R&B chart hits. this CD reissue of those long-unavailable vinyl classics provides a double dose of Soul Pleasure.

Side Effect - Same / What You Need - Fantasy CD
![]() available as CD |
Inc. Baby Love, Spend It On Love, Always There & Many Others Side Effect changed female leads with practically every album, all the while maintaining a sophisticated jazz-imbued sound that transcended the disco market at which it was aimed. the Soul vocal group's eponymous 1975 first release for Fantasy Records featured Sylvia Nabors alongside stalwarts Augie Johnson, Gregory Matta, and Louis Patton. ¨ that disc is coupled with the quartet's 1976, 2nd Fantasy effort, "What You Need", on which Nabors was replaced by Helen LaRue Lowe. ¨ Sylvia St James and Miki Howard were future leads, but the Lowe edition was the most successful, giving Side Effect the biggest of its nine R&B chart hits with the # 22 "Keep That Same Old Feeling". that catchy tune was penned by the group's producer, trombonist Wayne Henderson, who'd initially recorded it some months earlier with the Crusaders - and, using the pseudonym "Big Daddy," solos on the Side Effect version.
