Incognito - Who Needs Love - Dome 2LP/CD
|
||
![]() available as 2LP/CD |
Their 9th Brandhot Album, Already Voted As One Of 2003's Must-Own Soul/Jazz Albums Incognito's first break came in the 70s when Britain's influential and pioneering DJ Chris Hill gave them a recording contract with his Ensign label. Chris' understanding and love of Soul and jazz music helped the band to create their own brand of UK funk & jazz. their 9th brandhot album includes contributions from Brazilian musical genius Ed Motta and Britain's most enigmatic troubadour Paul Weller, "Who Needs Love" is a collection of passionately crafted songs and instrumentals. US featured vocalist Kelli Sae from New York is joined by Joy Rose, and former Incognito vocalist Joy Malcolm returns to the line-up. this album is a musical journey that showcases the band's 70s roots, documenting their steps along the way through the 80s & 90s. most importantly it shows how refreshing their sound is in a sea of imitators in the year 2003.

Presenting 26 US 6Ts Soul Chartbusters Inc. Falcons, Barbara Lynn, Homer Banks,... a CD that could almost be called the Soul edition of "Chartbusters USA" , this is a very strong compilation of classic 60s Soul that was popular in the States and among the UK’s cognoscenti at the time. many of the tracks were US hits including two R&B #1s (Intruders and Bettye Swann) and the tracks come from every area of 60s black music from deep ballads to uptempo ravers and all points inbetween. some of the tracks are from hard to license major record companies and others are from the crucial independent labels that pioneered the burgeoning Soul sound. Most haven’t been out on CD before and certainly not on such a tailor-made collection.

West Coast 6Ts Rhythm And Blues At Its Best Inc. Betty Bibbs, Vernon Garrett, Jackie Day.... although this is not a typical southern Soul CD the music here has the feel of being cut below the Mason-Dixon line. Whether the tempo is high, or we’re in deep Soul territory, there are the same "open", uncluttered production values. the emphasis here is on creating a setting for strong singers with gospel-based vocal styles to shine. so these tracks cover all the various Soul styles that were fashionable in the Golden Age, from the slowest of ballads to out-and-out Funk. and there are some superb tracks from artists like Betty Bibbs and Tommy Youngblood. better known figures like Johnny Copeland and Vernon Garrett complement them, and there is the usual cast of "who are these guys?" suspects. West Coast Rhythm and Blues at its best.

Isaac Hayes - Instrumentals - Stax CD
|
||
![]() available as CD |
Classic Rare New York Funk From A Jamaican Legend On The First Ever CD Release black music icon Isaac Hayes is rightly known for his rich baritone voice – but he started out as a musician – first in the Mar-Keys, then backing Otis Redding and then joining the Stax house band as pianist. as comfortable behind the keyboard as the microphone, Hayes’ recordings frequently stretched out into long instrumental breaks and several tracks were entirely instrumental apart from the occasional ooh-ing of background singers. this CD for the first time showcases the instrumental work of Hayes and his group Hot Buttered Soul, work which saw him earn an Oscar and create some very memorable music. several instrumental versions of cuts from his LPs are included – one of which is released here for the very first time (‘Type Thang’, an instrumental version of ‘Shaft’).

![]() available as 2LP/CD |
First-Ever CD Retrospective From This Soul Jazz Funk Trailblazers formed originally as a vocal counterpart to the legendary Jazz Crusaders – and produced by the Jazz Crusaders’ ‘bone man Wayne Henderson – Side Effect brought class and Soul to dance music via their definitive vocal renditions of Ronnie Laws’ ‘Always There’ and the Crusaders’ own ‘Keep That Same Old Feeling’ (both included here in their full length versions). Side Effect’s featured female singers, both heard here, included future solo stars Sylvia St James and Helen Lowe (also known as Helen Baylor). this compilation brings together all the best cuts from the group’s four original Fantasy albums, and offers nearly 79 minutes of not only the jazz-influenced dance music, but also many exquisite vocal group ballads that will be a revelation for those unfamiliar with the group’s more Soulful side.

1973 Riden Funky Fusion And Straight Ahead Jazz Fusion Reissue first release outside of Japan of this excellent jazz/fusion album originally released on the Three Blind Mice label in 1973. the album has now acquired cult status,original copies being extremely hard to find and exchanging hands for vast amounts in auctions. musically similar to many albums released on the in vogue Strata East label, a mixture of Groove - riden funky fusion and straight - ahead jazz. It features many of the young jazz lions of the time, Hubert Eaves, George Cables, Lenny White, Charles Sullivan and Steve Grossman. in terms of rarity, hip-ness, and musical direction comparisons can be made with the recently reissued ‘Black Renaissance’ by Harry Whitaker and plays by Gilles Peterson, Russ Drewbery etc.
